We offer a number of online programs and curricula to expand understanding of bioethics, and help individuals reach their professional and educational goals. Current offerings are below.

Vision of Hope

Palliative care is traditionally focused on care for the terminally ill, but scholars at the Berman Institute are aiming to change that by bringing the principles and comfort of palliative care to pediatric patients suffering from chronic illness. The “Vision of Hope” curriculum guides healthcare workers in integrating the principles and practices of pediatric palliative care into their long-term care regimen.

“Vision of Hope” uses two specific chronic conditions as case studies: sickle cell disease (SCD) and Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD).

Ethical Challenges in Short-Term Global Health Training

This course consists of a series of ten cases to introduce trainees and others involved in global health research and service to ethical issues that may arise during short-term training experiences abroad.

Engineering Life: Synbio, Bioethics & Public Policy

Synbio is a diverse field with diverse applications, and the different contexts (e.g., gain-of-function research, biofuels) raise different ethical and governance challenges. The objective of this course is to increase learners’ awareness and understanding of ethical and policy/governance issues that arise in the design, conduct and application of synthetic biology. The course will begin with a short history of recombinant DNA technology and how governance of that science developed and evolved, and progress through a series of areas of application of synbio.
