Working in conjunction with Johns Hopkins neonatologists Renee Boss, MD, and Cecilia Kwak, MD, the iDeas Lab produced two short informational films (one in English and one in Spanish). These serve as a communication tool for families of babies with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in the neonatal intensive care unit.
Drawing upon the wide range of experiences of previous patients, the goal of the video is to help these families, who are living through a very difficult moment, facilitate discussions with clinicians to better understand the potential pathways their babies could take in the NICU or after going home.
The physicians have enrolled multiple families, both English- and Spanish-speaking, in a study to gauge how effective the film is in preparing them to talk with doctors and understand their child’s lung condition. This project will reach three NICUs in the Johns Hopkins Hospital system and, if effective, serve as a potential prototype for other clinical scenarios and settings.
