Norman Carl Swart is a Lecturer at the University of Botswana School of Nursing, and has earned a PhD and a Master of Science in Nursing (Adult-Gerontology Oncology & Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner) at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. His dissertation was a pilot trial of a standardized nursing symptom assessment of patients undergoing treatment for advanced cancer in Botswana. He also holds a Master of Nursing Science (Family Nurse Practitioner [FNP]) from the University of Botswana, where, before his studies at Case Western, he was a clinical instructor and practiced as an FNP.
In addition to his doctoral research, he has been part of teams that have conducted clinical research in different patient populations, including people living with HIV and AIDS and cancer patients. His primary clinical nursing research interests centre on providing effective palliative care for patients with chronic illness in Botswana. In bioethics, Dr. Swart is interested in learning more about the ethical issues that clinicians and researchers face as they provide care or conduct research among patients who need palliative or end-of-life care. He is also interested in facilitating bioethics training for clinicians and researchers in Botswana and other countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
