Historically, pregnant persons have been excluded from biomedical research. While this has tended to reduce risks in research contexts, it has led to other ethical concerns – most pressingly a dearth of information to guide pregnancy-related care, with widespread harms to pregnant people and their children.

In this talk, Dr. Lyerly will discuss progress toward responsible and ethical inclusion of pregnant persons and their interests in biomedical research, addressing barriers to inclusion, areas of debate and progress, and immediate opportunities to ethically gather critical, pregnancy-specific data.

This programme is organised by the Master of Health Research Ethics (MOHRE) programme at Universiti Malaya (http://www.mohre.um.edu.my). It is supported by the Fogarty International Center of the United States, National Institutes of Health (Grant 2R25TW010891) in collaboration with the Berman Institute of Bioethics, Johns Hopkins University.
