Prof. DeGrazia will present and briefly defend the 6-principles framework that he developed with Tom Beauchamp in Principles of Animal Research Ethics (Oxford University Press, 2020). He will discuss in turn three principles of social benefit and three principles of animal welfare before clarifying how this framework fills in gaps left by the canonical “3 Rs”: replacement, reduction, and refinement. DeGrazia will also argue that the 6-principles framework offers the potential of bridging the divide between the animal-research and animal-protection communities.
