Join the Bloomberg School of Public Health for the first Health Systems Forum of the new academic year, a discussion on climate change and humanitarianism. Hugo Slim from the University of Oxford will present a new framework for humanitarian aid in the face of the climate change emergency. He will reflect on how current ethics and action in the sector are necessary, but not sufficient, for the climate change crisis. He will offer practical ethical pathways for aid workers and organizations to reimagine and redesign their purpose in responding to the increasing number of climate-related disasters around the world.

He will be followed a panel of experts, including the Berman Institute’s Maria Merritt, who will reflect on the ethical implications of providing humanitarian aid in conflict settings during climate-related disasters. The forum will allow for time after the panel reflections for an open discussion.

Participants include:

  • Keynote speaker: Hugo Slim, PhD, Senior Research Fellow, Las Casas Institute for Social Justice at Blackfriars Hall and the Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford
  • Panelist: Maria Merritt, PhD, Professor, Department of International Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics
  • Panelist: Gabrielle Prager, PhD Student, Department of International Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health
  • Moderator: Paul Spiegel, MD, Distinguished Professor of the Practice, Department of International Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Director, Center for Humanitarian Health
